Title: Esskay was there...
Description: for the Ripken years.

Does anyone else think these commercials are absurd and completely pointless.
If you haven't heard them on the radio they go something like this (I am not making this shit up).
1. Esskay was there, *we were there*, for the Ripken years. From a rookie to a legend, we followed his amazing career. "I was given the opportunity to endorse several products. Of course I was approached to do the hot dog ad and the milk ad, but I was also asked to do an underwear ad. You know, it wasn't by chance that I chose the milk and the Esskay because those were more comfortable. " Esskay was there.......
2. Esskay was there...... "People ask me what it was like to play with my brother. At the time I didn't think much of it.... I guess looking back it was kind of special" Esskay was there....
Ok seriously how does this sell hot dogs and/or make him sound like a great person? I wonder if they were going for something like the Burger King ads where they create word of mouth by way of people's disbelief and curiousity.
(Now I am totally making this shit up)
Here are the next two Ripken spots:
1. Esskay was there...... "I remember the day I ended my streak. Kelly wanted to try something new the night before and made this curry dish for dinner. Needless to say I had to put a trapdoor on the back of my uniform that day." Esskay was there.....
2. Esskay was there...... "I remember when I lost my virginity. It was during an away game and Larry Sheets was looking pretty good. Esskay was there....

LOL
I've been annoyed for years by those radio spots (old and new versions).
"2. Esskay was there...... "I remember when I lost my virginity. It was during an away game and Larry Sheets was looking pretty good. Esskay was there...."
Maybe this explains Cal's later friendship with Rafael Palmeiro. Both he and Sheets had that debonaire moustache.

I'd love to make fun of the 80's Tom Selleck type mustaches, but I'll be damned if I can grow one that awesome. :sad oops:

I was talking about these spots with a friend the other day and we both agreed that we would love to see them run alot differently.
How about instead of the stupid jingle they simple say "Here is another Ripken Baseball Moment." Then they play the original radioi call from some great moment and then Cal shares his memories of the event.
I would much rather hear Jon Miller and Cal talk about these things.

These ads are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I change the station for about 30 seconds when it is on.
