The forecast is for 24 inches in my neck of the woods. Eat your heart out Milt.

I do believe you guys have gotten more snow down there than we have. I, however, am not as jealous as Milt. :D

actorgersh - February 6, 2010 07:29 PM (GMT)
We were supposed to get a ton of snow in NY but so far we have gotten zero. I even had something cancelled yesterday because of the threat of snow.

I just returned from a baseball game in Nicaragua. I guess it was a good time to get out of dodge. I even made a comment to someone a week before leaving that it would be nice if DC got hit by a big snowstorm while I was down there.

Saw a game at the dilapidated Dennis Martinez stadium. Had a tona and some peanut brittle. At least, that's what I thought it was. Rivas beat Boer 3-2 in 10 innings. There was not a future major leaguer among the bunch.

Sounds like the O's in Florida last March...

Well, we got 28 inches in Columbia, Maryland. They haven't plowed any of the streets here, and word is that they probably won't until Tuesday at the earliest. My folks down in Potomac, Maryland have been without power since Saturday morning. Now, I'm hearing that we are probably going to get 4-8 inches of more snow on Tuesday night. Insanity.

Damn Dan, sorry to hear that. I REALLY feel sorry for your folks. That is horrible.
When we were out of power for days due to a hurricane, it was miserable, and miserable hot, but I'd take it a 100x over being in the cold.
Good luck

Thanks Milt. Talked to my folks this morning and they apparently got plowed out and have checked themselves into a nice hotel. No word on when their power is supposed to be back.

szekely - February 8, 2010 05:15 PM (GMT)
Well we here on the left coast are also toughing it out, though the sun in the last couple days has been a reprieve.

Now the great weather concern is rain. Not the flood your flat island town of alameda concern. I am talking about standing water. Water standing on the fairways and around the greens.

I have a golf tournament Saturday and if there is any kind of torture that must be avoided, it is the wet-toes-in-cold-shoes-with-wind-and-rain-while-slogging-18 holes while-there-is-a-breeze torture.

Playing Pebble Beach in the low 40s with sheets of fine mist and wind gusting to 30 was torture during a high school tournament, but having endured that, it explains what has made me the gonzo that I am today.

Dan: Glad your parents are warm and safe. Now if they had been stranded somewhere like around the 8th or 9th hole and they had not been snow plowed out or squeegied out, that would have been really bad.

Jack- It's snowing again. Stanhouse and I may be trapped in the hospital (working). This stinks.--Tania

Tania it is a white out here in Reliance. The wind has really picked up and it is blizzard-like. Don't take any chances trying to get home. I'm sure Evelyn and Thomas are doing fine. Jack

We got hit pretty hard up here in NY, unlike the imaginary snowstorm we got last weekend. My girlfriend and I have very different jobs though. She was able to work from home, where because I have a job outside I had to brave it if I want to get paid. This is where the combination of my Cal Ripken work ethic and my Scott Boras clients' desire for money both come into play simultaneously.

draftermatt - February 11, 2010 03:12 AM (GMT)
I was told to stay home from work today and tomorrow by my boss. Since he doesn't pay me if I show up it's a win for him anyway.

I have no idea how much snow we got today, the drifts in my driveway were over 4', I've got piles over 7', and I have no idea where my yard is.

That's a shot of my front yard (and my neighbors back yard) from my front door from earlier today. I just spent the past 2 hours with my 3 neighbors shoveling/blowing/plowing our 4 driveways (we live on a common drive). That fence is 4'-0" high.

My wife is having a slumber party at work, but she's bound and determined to come home tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the city of Portland, Maine had to cancel its winter festival for lack of snow.

This is global climate change I can live with! :P

szekely - February 11, 2010 04:17 PM (GMT)
Any reprieve from the snow onslaught for you guys? (other than all State of Maine Os fans--sluggo and son)

I hope it turns out to be nothing worse than getting snowed out of work for a day or two.

Stay safe, and warm and dry.

Skipjack - February 11, 2010 05:26 PM (GMT)
We got about another 15 or so inches from Son of Blizzard 2010 on top of the previous 18 or so from The Blizzard of 2010. This was worse though, in that it was powdery and the strong winds banked it impressively in the driveway.

A great neighbor down the road came by in his humongus tractor with an 8 foot blade and cleared the driveway…which infuriated one of the county road plow teams so they came by and put a foot or more back in the driveway. Thank goodness Rose is well rested.

The electric has stayed on so the well pump is functioning and the gas furnace is blowing out warm air. I made a run to town on Tuesday for provisions and therefore have a huge bottle of Maker's Mark to sustain me for a bit. Proust! Skoal! Mazel Tov! Health! Cheers! etc

szekely - February 11, 2010 07:11 PM (GMT)
Now that is a snapshot of what government does for you--it takes a clear space and gives you a snow job.

If you like bourbon, try to get George Dickel, at Bev Mo. For $21 or so, you get the only bourbon I really like, though Maker's Mark is a decent option.

One nice feature of Bev Mo is that they list all awards or rankings given to their offerings, and you can see all that info on their website, which can also tell you what is in stock at that moment at your local store.

Or you can order online. I tend not to do that, as there is a fun aspect of shopping there, what with all the labels and descriptions of their offerings.

There is a myth about men not liking shopping. We do, we just like to shop quickly and for something in our sites. Like liquor, baseball tickets, and food. We men are fairly easy to please, if women would only "get it" or Give it or buy it. . . .

Skipjack - February 11, 2010 08:09 PM (GMT)
I like the rye that Marker's Mark uses in their mash instead of wheat. I like the nice sweet finish on the tip of the tongue.

szekely - February 11, 2010 08:47 PM (GMT)
Rye is such an interesting addition to the bourbon distillation. Every other bourbon using rye (or the rye whiskeys) besides M Mark I have sampled has such a kick to it, like the rye was supposed to slap you with its boldness. Not that strong was necessarily a problem, but they were all bolder bourbons.

Glad you are fortified in Reliance on the proper elements for survival.
