Title: ripken as owner?
dedwretched - December 15, 2006 02:04 AM (GMT)
sorry if this has been posted. this was on rotoworld.
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that Peter Angelos and Cal Ripken Jr. are discussing a gradual transfer of ownership of the Orioles to a group that would include Ripken.
The sooner the better. However, Rosenthal reports the chances of such a sale occurring anytime soon are remote and that the 77-year-old Angelos may decide to leave the club to his sons rather than sell.

Well, I'm glad to see that there's a chance of Angelos selling the team to a Cal-lead group.
In fact, I sort of predicted it (I posted something to this effect on the O's MLB board).

first of all, thank you, thank you for posting this!
second, i find it really funny that rotoworld has the story listed under "Miguel Tejada - Orioles"
i have so many immediate reactions to it - particularly because they met prior to Thanksgiving and will likely meet prior to Christmas, since this makes it seem like a story that might actually have some substance to it.
but i still want to hear what Puma meant when he said something like, "I've seen how things are run at Aberdeen, so I'm not getting my hopes up." i know i murdered that quote, but that's the gist of what i remember.
i only know that what i've seen of Aberdeen - the stadium, the soldout games, that fantastic IBTV setup - what i've heard on the Ripken radio show every Saturday - his involvement in youth baseball fundamentals - that recent venture with Melvin Mora regarding the Academy in Venezuela - all of these things have continued to ignite my passion for him to own this club.
Puma - explain?

d,
i believe it says miguel tejada bc when there's news involving the team, but none of the players, it shows the best player. when buck showalter was getting canned, it said mark teixeira.
i guess it's better than saying brandon fahey. :P

ah, did not know that. still, i thought it was funny...

Please don't categorize me as anything close to an insider. If something were to break, I would be about 100th on a list that would get a phone call about an impending Orioles sale to a Ripken Group.
What I do know, comes from asking questions when issues come up. The way it has all been explained to me is that the eventual goal is for Ripken Baseball to own a Major League Team and that team may or may not be the Orioles. The goals for this 10 year period were to grow in to the dominant name in minor league baseball and own 10 teams in 10 years. That would be rather extraordinary as it would require owning a team in each minor league.
Also, the development of the youth baseball academy in Myrtle Beach and the complex in Aberdeen were to be models for youth baseball academies all over the U.S. and begin to branch internationally. The first steps of the international attempts have ben made with Mora and I had that was in the works for a while but nothing was final.
I tend not to get too excited because Ripken Baseball doesn't have the capitol to pull a move like this off. It is currently maxed out trying to grow and this would jump the timeline by 7-8 years assuming that all went well.
The way I could see this rumor having some legs is that Angelos has decided to get out. He would then contact Cal and allow him to try and get a group together that could afford his asking price. The numbers mentioned also cause me pause because Chip Mason would be maxed out by this as well.
I would love (repeat LOVE) to be wrong about this but I have serious doubts. Having said that, Rosenthal absolutely has sources so maybe they know something new.

I wonder: if Cal was owner of the Orioles, would he retire his own number?
Anyhow, sounds like something that's in the earliest stage of negotiation. Anything can happen between now and the sale, and that's assuming there is a sale at all.

It is already retired.
They did so his last day in uniform.

Boy, that was dissappointing there. Angelos knows he is not liked by the fans of Baltimore but yet it feels like he enjoys that. Man there was a small, small ray of hope for a minute there and Angelos squashed it with his first paragraph. No build up to it at all. This man has no heart. :offacliff:

Cal and the Orioles
I have little doubt that Cal Ripken will eventually become involved in an ownership group that purchases the Orioles. He can't do it alone. Not at that cost. But he'll be an owner. I just don't know what to make of Ken Rosenthal's story that Ripken and Peter Angelos already have broached the subject and the wheels are in motion.
Rosenthal got his information from a reliable source. He's one of the best reporters in the business. Has been for a long time. You'd be amazed at how plugged in he is, with information available at his finger tips. It's inspiring to watch him work a lobby at the winter meetings. But a person close to Ripken denies that there's a story, saying another rumor pops up every time Angelos and the future Hall of Famer share a meal.
Either way, it makes for good conversation. Try it over dinner tonight.
Ripken just wants to be given a heads-up when Angelos is ready to sell. And I'm sure they've discussed this over appetizers.
Once again, we're entering a gray area here.
I doubt that it's going to happen in the near future, but yes, Ripken wants a chance to own the team. And it seems likely that Angelos will give it to him.
Just not during tonight's salad course. |
btw, scuff, i'm still waiting for my medal for that smiley.......

Well at least it seems like what Roch has been told and what I have been told line up. I would be curious to see what other stories Rosenthal's source has broken. I am sure that he is legit and I would be curious about the source of the particulars.

I honestly think that Angelos is just saying that to make it seem he has control in this organization.
If rumors like this have reached the ears of FoxSports, there has to have been atleast some kind of conceptual talk. I'd like to think that they were discussing "what if" scenearios. Which in a semantic way would not constitute "talking" about transfering ownership.
I would have an orgasm if this happened, but I think we'd have to wait atleast 5 or 6 years.

Always thinking about yourself, does the wife/signigicant other complain? :P
Just kidding lol.

I actually have the opposite problem when it comes to the wifey. I'lljust leave it at that...
I would be able to stand that thought of you "overcome with joy" in order to get rid of Peter the Greek and install Cal.

lMy bet is that Peter the attorney is holding his cards close to his vest.
And the definition for Peter of "discussions" is when formalities are in place and numbers and time tables and structure of the deal are put on the table, not talking about making preliminary baby steps. You know, the definition of "is" is not what you think.
And without making that sound cynical, it is always an interesting challenge for attorneys in negotiations to say everything while saying nothing and saying little that means a lot. The art of the talk--trust me, it is about not outright deception, but saying things that are necessary in the dance of settlement/negotiations. The negotiators understand and then go back to their clients/principals and translate and communicate meanings behind the words and between the lines.
I bet there is talk between Cal and Peter.
